Align your Team to Achieve Your Dream
We’ve all heard about the impact that effective communication may have on your dairy. Today’s blog, however, focuses on a particular aspect of effective communication: communicating your goals, vision and dreams to your team around you.
Too often owners and leaders at the dairy hold their vision and their goals close to their chest, either afraid to be pushed back against, viewing it as a secret for only a select audience, or viewing it as their priority area and not others on the team. The reality, however, is that there are considerable benefits to being more forthcoming with goals. It’s incredible what you can achieve when the well-oiled machine that makes up your team is aligned around what constitutes success.
Why might more awareness and alignment among your team help to achieve your goals? Here’s a few thoughts:
- Play on a winning team: Generally speaking, most people on your team (in particular, those in management or ownership) want to play on a winning team and to do that they need to understand what success looks like and how you measure it. Figure out some measurable steppingstones to help determine what success looks like.
- Build a robust plan: Everyone has a different perspective and comes from different experiences. Your teammates may have some effective input that can help refine, enhance, or adjust a goal. Getting feedback from others always helps bring clarity. Challenges from others make a plan better!
- Energy creates accountability: Your plan has a much higher likelihood of success if the team members are bought into and feel empowered by it. They care about your dairy and get energy from a leader presenting a vision for the future. The energy helps create a cadence of accountability that surpasses your own individual focus on the goal.
- Excitement drives success: Your chances of success are measurably higher when your team is excited and challenged for the future. One definition of leadership is the ability to inspire people to think beyond their role in the organization to a broader perspective of the impact that they can have. Energy and excitement are contagious!
So, give some consideration to being more transparent and better communicating your future plans, your vision, and your goals – the success of your dairy may depend on it!
