Effective Teams
Effective teams are the foundation of every successful organization. What makes one team effective while others are not is a bit complex. Effective teams are doing several things “right” starting with staying grounded to the business’s core values, mission and vision. This clear direction that is established and set by the leader(s) of an organization is key! It is what holds them together, through thick and thin. Organizations where teams struggle simply are not working well together.
What are some characteristics of an effective team?
- We win or we lose TOGETHER. Each member sets aside personal bias and is willing to take on the responsibilities of a group.
- Each member brings his or her talents and skills, which contribute to the overall success of the group. They focus on each member’s STRENGTHS to bring out the best in one another.
- GOALS are established and understood by all the members of the team. Everyone is ALIGNED facing the same direction and focused on delivering the results.
- They are CONSISTENTLY evaluating their performance. Are we on track or off course to reach our goals?
- Timelines are tracked and ACCOUNTABILITY is a reality.
- Each member has a PROBLEM-SOLVING mindset. What hurdles are in the way of the team reaching the goals? How can I help lend a hand to my teammates? They seek ways to increase productivity and efficiency.
- They value DIVERSITY while maintaining RESPECT for one another. This is the “secret sauce” to the most effective teams! Diversity in thought, their skills, natural talents, differing opinions, and creative ideas to name a few. Your way is not the only way.
- They promote OPEN COMMUNICATION by creating and operating in a SAFE environment. This is so critical and too, is part of that “secret sauce.” Each member can feel like they will be heard, not judged when they speak up and top performing leaders of the most effective teams foster and ensure this happens.
- Without a doubt, the most effective teams HAVE FUN! In fact, they even schedule it 🙂
Practice is progress! Yes, it does take a lot to be an effective team and it doesn’t happen on its own. Think of all the benefits of being a part of a successful and effective team. You are one member of that team and can make a significant impact by simply doing your part.
