The 2022 Debrief
It’s time to begin your 2022 debrief! When the sight of winter begins to appear and fall harvest is in the rear-view mirror, it’s a great reminder that we need to pause and assess. How did you and your teams perform in 2022? Did we meet the goals established nearly a year ago? What might we have lost track of or hasn’t been a priority? Are we set up to close out the year where we want to be?
Often, there is a “harvest debrief” once this mission is complete. This is a great example as it involves a multitude of people, various teams, managers from different departments, longer than normal hours, performance metrics to be achieved, people to be fed, etc. and it takes everyone working together to attain the best cow chow while being completed in a short period of time. We can all speak to the orchestration of effort required to complete this mission! High performing teams are consistently evaluating, celebrating the successes and looking for the next opportunity to improve. The practice of getting everyone together to debrief is key! You can close the door on one mission and set up for the next one.
While harvest debrief may be the most common area evaluated annually, it is additionally as important to do this same activity and process throughout your entire operation. Think of the potential upside in doing this: not only for your own year-end strategic planning, but also for the message that it will send to your managers and staff. It’s another team building exercise, it just looks a little different than when you are all covering the silage pile. Great leaders invest in including others on their planning so that everyone is aligned for the next mission: 2023! Oh, and yes, your GPS consultant, lender, and other advisors will also be very impressed 😉
Time to get that jumpstart on looking back at what you and your team set out to accomplish in 2022. Put the meeting dates on the calendar to get your managers and/or teams together. It’s a good time to pause and reflect around the success and shortfalls. It’s hard to believe that there are only 10 weeks left before we turn the page on another year. Let’s finish strong and get ready for 2023!
